Khavn’s films are also available at Asia Pacific Films and Doc Alliance.

Khavn De La Cruz’s fame as a filmmaker has tended to obscure his achievements in literature: getting published at age 17; winning his first Palanca in 1997 for the poetry collection, Larombata; becoming a fellow of the UP National Writers Workshop thrice; and getting invited to a writing residency at the Ventspils International Writers House in Latvia. He was given the Dean’s Award for Literature from his alma mater, the Ateneo De Manila University, where he has also lectured about the creative process.

To date, Khavn has finished five books, including an anthology of Philippine poetry, two poetry collections, a non-fiction compendium on Philippine cinema, and Ultraviolins, hailed as the first postmodern book of stories in Filipino. He is currently working on five other books, among them a film book which will be released under UST Publishing.

Interestingly, Khavn’s writing is not far removed from his cinema which combines expressionistic grotesquerie, punk deconstructivism, and an inconvenient talent for telling unpopular truths.

He has served as jury member at the Berlinale, Clermont-Ferrand , CPH:DOX, Jeonju, Jihlava, & Dok Leipzig film festivals and is the festival director of .MOV International Film, Music, & Literature Festival, the first digital film festival in the Philippines.

WHAT ELSE DOES KHAVN DO?

Write

Khavn has written five books: an anthology of Philippine poetry, two poetry collections, a non-fiction compendium on new Philippine cinema, and Ultraviolins, which has been hailed as the first post-modern book of stories in Filipino.

He has judged in the Palanca National Literary Awards and has won for himself in poetry and fiction. He received the Dean’s Award for Literature from his alma mater, the Ateneo De Manila University, where he has also served as a member of the faculty, and lectured on the creative process.

Play

Khavn is a songwriter and has performed his original compositions either as a solo pianist or with one of his three bands (Fando & Lis, The Brockas, and Vigo) in Thessaloniki, Austin, Brisbane, Edinburgh, New York, Sharjah, Rome, and many others.

He is well-known for the improvisational live scoring of several of his films, either solo or with other musicians.

More recently, he collaborated with the French-German duo Stereo Total on the soundtrack of his 46th feature, Ruined Heart.

Work

Khavn is the president of Kamias Overground, an independent film, music, and publishing company.

Kamias Overground’s releases include the music albums Impyerno by Lav Diaz, Yearnings by Roberto Nicolas, Lost & Found by Fando & Lis, and Songs From the End of the World featuring 12 of Manila’s best folk singer-songwriters. Recent book titles include Planet of the Noses by Rox Lee, Mondomanila, or: How I Fixed My Hair After A Rather Long Journey by Normal Wilwayco, and  Philippine New Wave: This Is Not A Film Movement by Khavn himself.
